Religious Experience & The Brain

How does the brain process religious experience?

Horizon Research Foundation

For many who have had an NDE, the experience has had a profoundly religious effect on them, changed their outlook and led them to live more altruistic, less materialistic lives. Perhaps, in order to understand NDEs better, we need to understand religious experiences better. Many people have in fact likened NDEs to religious experiences.

In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in latest research using high tech brain imaging techniques to understand the areas of the brain that are involved in different human experiences. This includes religious experience. more

How do brain cells work and can this tell us how our experiences arise?

Although scientists have discovered much about how brain cells work, there is still very little known about how human experience and thoughts arise. For more information read here

How does brain imaging work and what does it mean for understanding our experiences?

Recent brain-imaging studies using PET scans and functional Magnetic Resonance imaging have increased our understanding of the areas of the brain involved with conscious experiences. Using such scans, we can now find what parts of the brain are active or inactive at any given time. For example when someone performs a specific action or has a specific mental process such as a feeling, there is increased glucose or oxygen uptake by the cells in a specific area of the brain. And we can find out what parts of the brain light up when people have certain feelings - for example when a person feels sad, what part of the brain lights up? This tells us that a particular pathway that is lighting up on the scanner is somehow involved in mediating that function more

What about the latest discoveries on out of body experiences?

n recent years, there have been a number of studies published by scientists that have suggested that out of body experiences are illusions created as a result of an abnormally functioning brain. Do you agree?

Many scientists do not agree with this simplistic view.

Do you want to know why?
