In order to make the public aware of the Human Consciousness Project as well as the AWARE study and the implications for the potential discovery of consciousness, an introductory symposium was held in London on 10th September 2009, which also marked the first anniversary of the launch of the Human Consciousness Project. This symposium was a prelude to a larger symposium, likely to be held in September 2010.

15 May 2009 – Indianapolis
Launch of the AWARE Study in the United States
 
The first centre to participate in the AWARE Study in the United States was officially unveiled.  Dr Mark Barber, Head of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis and also Indiana State University, together with his team of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, have commenced the study.  During a day of great excitement, many members of the medical and nursing staff, associated healthcare professionals, and hospital public relations officers, gathered to commemorate the beginning of this research project.  Dr Sam Parnia joined the team and helped train and educate the staff in terms of the day to day and practical running of the study.  To start, it is anticipated that there will be at least 2-3 patients enrolled from this centre starting May 2009.

19 May 2009 – Paris
French Emergency Medicine Society Looks Into Adopting the AWARE and Brain 1 Research Protocols.

Following an invitation from the Research Committee of the French Emergency Medicine Society, Dr Parnia and Dr Ferrero attended a meeting in Paris in which they presented the current AWARE and Brain 1 study protocols to the members of the Research Committee.  Following a lively and constructive discussion many members of the Committee showed great interest in adopting and modifying the protocol to be used during cardiac arrests that occur outside the hospital.  It is anticipated that there will be further discussions in the coming months in order to see if this study can be developed practically and set up on a national basis across France.

International Collaboration Into the Study of Mind, Brain and Consciousness Continues To Expand.
 
The International Collaboration into the study of Mind, Brain and Consciousness continues to expand – at  the end of this month there will be 10 sites actively recruiting patients in the UK, while a further 5 are also waiting the appropriate infrastructure to start recruiting the patients into the AWARE Study.  Members of the Human Consciousness Project are in discussions with approximately 10 other medical centres in the United States as well as numerous medical centres in Europe, including Belgium, France, Austria, Sweden, Croatia, Turkey and also Israel to set up the AWARE Study.  A further 100 images were also delivered to Chicago, in anticipation of launching the study at the second US site in Chicago in June.
 
 
 


  

 Science of Near-Death Experience:
 
Colleague, Jeffrey Long, compiled cases of near death experience that had been sent to him over the years.
 
Published, January 2010, the book has been featured on some of the major media outlets in the United States including the Today Show as well as on CNN.com and reached the New York Times Bestseller list almost immediately after it was released.
